Big Idea:
Observation and description of changes in the world around us
are the first steps in finding and learning about patterns.

Essential Question:
What are some situations that we can describe as variable?

Class Notes:

· Definition of Variable: A quantity that may change
· Online Free Graphing calculator is helpful. Website link is: http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/
· Definition of Dependent Variable: one of the two variables that depends on the other
· Definition of Independent Variable: The other of the two variables, the one that does not change. It is independent.
· Definition of Coordinate pair: 2 points on a graph that can be connected. One point should be from x axis and the other from y-axis.
· Definition of Scale: A labeling scheme used to label the x-axis and y-axis on a bar or coordinate graph.
· Graphs, tables and line plots are ways of displaying data.
· Benefits of graphs: shows patterns, gives visual, displays relationships, helps make predictions
· Benefits of a table: displays clear and exact data, displays differences
· When line segments are connected it should be assumed that the data is continuous

A. Make a table of (time, distance) data that reasonably fits the information in Malcolm and Sarah’s notes.

B. Sketch a coordinate graph that shows the same information.

Follow Up:
Explain how you used each of the six notes to help you make your table and graph.

I used the notes of the hidden data by highlighting all the numeral data in my mind. Then I just estimated data that fit according to the given clues. The most informative parts that were stated as the notes and the ones that helped me make the table and graph were the starting point at 8:30, the hours traveled, the break times and the total miles traveled at the end.
